NICASIO, Marin County — October 28, 2026. Marin County has taken a major step toward improving the intersection of Point Reyes–Petaluma Road and Nicasio Valley Road. On August 18, 2026, the Board of Supervisors awarded a $1,265,237 construction contract to Ghilotti Construction Company, Inc. for a project intended to reduce turning conflicts and improve rural road safety.
What will change at the intersection?
According to Marin County’s District 4 public report, the project includes a dedicated left-turn pocket, roadway widening, pavement rehabilitation, shoulder work, better drainage, replacement guardrails, a retaining wall, pavement markings and traffic signs. The improvements are meant to serve residents, farms, school transportation, cyclists, emergency vehicles and visitors in West Marin.
Will the county close the road?
The county reports that construction may require temporary lane closures, but full road closures are not permitted under the project plan. Traffic would continue using alternating one-way control, temporary signals, flaggers or pilot cars as appropriate. Marin’s report says drivers should generally expect delays of around five minutes, with ordinary delays limited to no more than eight minutes. These are planning expectations, not measured travel times for every driver or evidence that crews were working at a specific moment on October 28.
How is it funded?
The county also approved a 10% construction contingency of approximately $126,524 and a total project budget adjustment of $1,691,761 including construction management, inspection, surveying and related county costs. About 90% of eligible costs are supported by the state Highway Safety Improvement Program; the county’s reported funding mix includes $1,522,585 in state grant support and a $169,176 local match. The construction award and overall budget adjustment describe different financial measures and should not be added together as separate construction awards.
Why local residents should follow it
Nicasio’s rural road junctions carry a mix of local, agricultural, recreational and through traffic. Design and traffic-control plans may affect school travel, cycling and access to properties during construction. The county says community feedback led to a smaller retaining-wall design where possible.
